I read Dropise Avenue and the beginning was very dark. It starts out with a farming family complaining about the new neighbors moving in on their land. Then the husband yelling at his brother in law about how lazy he was, which then led to the uncle getting drunk and trying to set the new neighbors house on fire which resulted in killing his niece who followed him out in the middle of the night. After the death of the daughter the father finds outs and then shoots the his brother in law while his wife stands by and let him.

years go by and the couple eventually dies in that house while the area develops into a booming neighborhood. Then the story shift it's focus to the O'Brien Family who buys the lot that the Poor farmers home once stood. Then to another family the O'Leary's who seemed to have a grudge against the O'Brein's.
